This is a compilation with a difference from Western Star, well known for their excellent Rockabilly & Physcobilly output this takes a look at a very specific era in rock n roll history, the very distinctive British sound of the late '50's and early 60's.

It gathers together some of the labels regulars who you will be familiar with Jack Rabbit Slim, Graham Fenton, Bill McFadden adds in some perhaps not so well knowns and features them covering songs from this era.

Having first listened to this it reminded of just how good the of music from that period was, this is the type of stuff that first took me on the path to rockin music, raiding my parents selection of 45's and tape to tape reels hearing Joe Brown's superb guitar work and listening to Billy Fury's exquisette vocals. John Leyton reprises his Johnny Remember Me and how good it sounds too in modern settings without that horrible tape hiss from my past.

What has been done so sucessfully here is fusing the new with the old seemlessly, the songs sound as fresh now by the current artists as they did 50 or so years ago, it says a lot about the production values applied here and talent of the artists.

I will not review each track there are 25 of them! However standouts for me are Sparkling Brown Eyes by JRS, That's What Love Will Do by Howlin Wilson (Actually Alan Wilson, the label owner and Sharks founder), You Took My Love For Granted - John Leyton and a rousing version of Hoots Mon!

It's not wild rockabilly but it's great music and perhaps a chance for some who have only recently come to the rockin scene via the modern bands or the american rockabilly sound to listen to this stuff for the first time and then explore the originals to discover a very distinctive and vibrant musical sound.

Happy New Year
