Buddy Holly backup singers honored in Austin

28 February 2009
Little-known backup singers of Buddy Holly are finally getting some recognition.

The two surviving members of his in-studio backup trio known as the Picks were honored by Texas lawmakers with a resolution Monday.

"We have lived in the shadow for a long time," 75-year-old John Pickering said. "The Crickets didn't sing. We were the ghost voices in the studio."

John Pickering and his late brother Bill Pickering, and their partner Bob Lapham, 74, never performed in public with Holly but sang in nine of his recordings. Little has been said or written about their connection to Holly.

John Pickering and Lapham said they were honored by the Senate resolution introduced by Lubbock Republican Sen. Bob Duncan. The three were students at Texas Tech University when they recorded with Holly in 1957 and 1958.
