'NICOTYNA' - A neo-rockabilly band from Mexico which was formed 7 years ago.
Nicotyna are RUSTY (Double Bass/Vocals), MARYO (Drums/Vocals), GUADALUPE (Guitar/Vocals), NEF (Lead Guitar).

Really Rockabilly. Hello guys!

There is not much information about your band on Internet. Can you tell us a little about yourselves?. Is Nicotyna your first band, or have all of you played in different bands before? 7 years together seems like a long time, especially as all of you look so young. Am I right to say that your music is influenced by 80's rockabilly revival? Who are your musical idols and did they change a lot since you grew up?

N. NICOTYNA started at the end of 2000 almost seven years ago with Rusty, Wadalupe and Maryo as the original members. We always wanted to start a band which would revive the Rockabilly music scene over here.
Only Maryo had a previous Rockabilly band, and that broke up in 1997. In Nicotyna, Maryo sings and plays a stand-up drums. He's a happy boy who enjoys listening to all the heroes of Sun Records from the 1950s.
Wadalupe sings and plays rhythm guitar. She is the one and only woman who plays rockabilly in Mexico, and she has a real wild style. She's is sweet, sexy and rebelious. She likes to listen to Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Carlos & the Bandidos, Los Rebeldes, Robert Gordon and of course the Stray Cats.
Rusty sings and plays Double Bass in an unusual style never seen before here in Mexico. He's a bit of a dreamer and a big collector of vinyl LPs and 45s from all over the world. He admires Elvis, Richie Valens , Johnny Burnette, Johnny Carroll and all underground artists from the 50s like The Phantom, Bobby Roberts, Laura Lee Perkins, Colleen Frazier, Hasil Adkins, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Screaming Lord Sutch and Vince Taylor. He also likes to hear Neo-Rockabilly like The Polecats, The Stray Cats, The Rockats, The Cramps, Crazy Cavan & the Rhythm Rockers, Robert Gordon, Runnin' Wild, Guana Batz, The Meteors and Pearl Harbor.
Nicotuna had has 2 different guitar players from the beginning. The new guy GILBERTO plays in his own style. He likes and admires Elvis Presley's guitarman Scotty Moore, Link Wray, Brian Setzer, and Paul Burlison.

Yeah, it is our first band except for Mario who formed a band called Los Defers at the beginning of the 90s. We formed Nicotyna when we were at High School. Our musical tastes are still same although we love listening to new bands, as some of them are just as good job as the guys in the 50s, like Bridgitte Handley & The Black Shadows, The Barnshakers, Mike Sanchez, Carlos & the Bandidos, Big Sandy & the FlyRite Boys, Kim Lenz and her Jaguars, Nick Curran etc...

RR. The first time that I heard of you was through your MySpace account where you have four of your songs available to listen. I liked the energy that the recordings have - so when I found out that you were playing at Tattoed Lady festival in Spain (which took place last February) I was very happy to see you perform live. Was it the only live appearence you made in Europe this Winter?

N. No, we have played three shows in Spain. Our first time in Spain was in Madrid in a Rock bar "El Pirata", the second was in saloon "Japan" in the city of Castellon and the third was at Tattoed Lady Festival in Malaga.

RR. Were you pleased with the response that you received from your time in Spain?

N. Yeah, it was a pleasure. There were great comments about us at the end of every show and also we did the presentation of our new CD called "Alrededor del Mundo".

RR. Most of your gigs are happening in Mexico. Do you have a big rockabilly/psychobilly scene in your homeland?

N. Yeah, most of the shows we play are in big cities, and we can say that Rockabilly music is getting more and more popular over here.

RR. I hope you have a great time at Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Knitting Factory in Hollywood. Are you planning more shows in the U.S.A.? Please tell us about any future plans for the band.

N. Thank you very much for your good wishes. Yes, we are thinking of going to all the major rockin' evens in the US and we will return to Los Angeles in September. Look out for us in Europe as well!

At the moment we are really busy promoting our latest CD "Alrededor del Mundo". We will continue promoting it throughout the year. Also we are finishing filming a documentary called "Nicotyna - Addiction To Rockabilly". By the end of the year we are planning to finish an EP on vinyl and put together a show for national TV. So, get ready for " Nicotyna's Addiction to Rockabilly".
